13 June 2017 In Sixth Form News
As part of the recent OFSTED inspection, Weavers Sixth Form was also inspected and we were very pleased with the outcomes from this report. It reflects the hard work that both staff and students have put in to make our Sixth Form a real asset to the community. You can view the report here

In brief OFSTED commented that “Good teaching and leadership in the sixth form allows students to achieve well and prepare effectively for their next steps”

“Across a range of subjects, students engage in mature debate and discussion, and a great majority of students go on to higher education when they leave school and gain places at prestigious universities”.

It was also pleasing to note that OFSTED recognised the work that goes on with students in the sixth form outside of academic qualifications. “Post-16 students have access to a wide range of enrichment opportunities. Students told inspectors that these wider opportunities gave them greater confidence and prepared them better for life after school.”

Lastly, a comment on what we are really here for! “A strong programme of careers advice and guidance prepares students for their next steps in education, employment or training.”

If you are interested in joining our growing sixth form as a student commencing in September 2017, we still have places available. Please contact the school for further information.

These are photographs that were taken in the final CET vocal workshop on Friday 12th May. Students worked with Charles MacDougall who is the vocal coach with the voices foundation.

Two sessions ran throughout the day: The first working with the Vocal ambassadors:

Alexis Spillane, Charlotte Hancox, Kezia Welsh, Jodie Spaughton

Kezia Welsh states: "Working with Charles MacDougall has enabled her to expend her vocal range by applying warm up techniques to each her singing sessions”.

Jodie Spaughton states: "It was really helpful to see how a quality warm up session can be used to extend the flexibility in my voice. I also liked working on harmonies with the other vocal ambassadors"

The second vocal workshop was Charles working with the Weavers choir.

The vocal ensembles are now preparing for their performance on the  “Day of song” on the  14th July at Abbeyfield.

In the first week of the Easter Holidays, 40 students and 5 staff went on the school ski trip to Saalbach-Hinterglemm, Austria. It was a very enjoyable week full of challenges and adventure. All of the students showed great resilience and worked very hard throughout the week which was evident in their skiing ability by the end. I would like to thank the students who attended the trip for their exceptional behaviour and I would like to thank the staff who gave up their free time to come and support and motivate the pupils.

As part of the music acoustic programme, Year 9, 10 and 11 music student have been preparing a series of lunchtime performances to showcase their extensive musical talents. Performances included year 9 soloist, Year 10 duets and band performances of a range of popular style. There was also a performance of one of Charlotte Hancox’s compositions, composed specifically for her University audition to continue her musical studies.

Many thanks to Mr Burton and Mr Calcutt for their continued support with the Weavers Year 10 band.

The Creative Education Trust have created a Shakespeare 7x7 festival in which all of the Secondary schools perform a Shakespearean play. The latest Weavers production was Macbeth in December in which the Drama department created an interpretation which consisted of 9 witches and an innocent Lady Macbeth. Allowing a classic play to become dark and engaging for a young modern audience. This was beautifully acted by Year 9 and 10 students at Abbeyfield School. The costumes were designed by Year 10 textiles students and added a visual impact to the performance.

A huge congratulations to the Year 10 girls’ volleyball team for finishing 3rd in the County. They qualified for the final held at the National Volleyball centre by winning the Wellingborough District tournament. Their athleticism and fantastic team work put in some excellent performances.

They eventually lost out to Campion School (who went onto win) in an epic deciding set that went to the wire.

Well done to all the girls who also have been invited to attend the regional training at the centre and further their development.

Mr K Dee
