Academy Co-Curricular

At Weavers academy, we believe in offering students a broad range of activities to help them develop skills and experiences beyond the normal academic curriculum.  On a Monday period 6, key stage 3 students participate in the Co-curricular program, which has been specifically designed with this in mind.  

In years 7 and 8, students will complete 6 modules that sit alongside the academic curriculum, giving them opportunities to try something new, or stretch and challenge an interest they already have.

Three of these modules will be completed by all students, as they develop core skills and values that we feel are important for all Weavers students to experience.  A further three modules have an element of choice - students choose their top 2 from the list, and they will be allocated one of them.

In year 9, we wanted to give students an opportunity to try subjects they may be able to choose at GCSE.  Students complete 2 compulsory units to support their move into key stage 4. These are ‘Being organised’, which focusses on how to organise digital files, use planners and meet deadlines. Then ‘How to research’, which looks at how to choose the right websites, and referencing methods.

Students then get to choose 3 of the 9 modules on offer, and they will be allocated 2 of them.  These modules run from September to February, then February to July, ensuring that students have an opportunity to really experience the subject (approximately 18 lessons).

Academy Enrichment

Enrichment can be classed as anything that goes beyond the standard curriculum to enhance and enrich students development.  It is an opportunity for students to expand their learning and develop new skills and interests.  There are multiple studies that reaffirm that participation in after-school activities results in better grades, better behavior in the classroom and better work habits.  At Weavers, our aim is to have 100% of our students involved in a weekly enrichment activity either within school or in the community.

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award is a voluntary, non-competitive programme of practical, cultural and adventurous activities, designed to support the personal and social development of young people. It offers an individual challenge and encourages young people to undertake exciting, constructive, challenging and enjoyable things in their free time. The Award is widely recognised by educationalists and employers.

Some of the benefits to young people include developing or discovering:

• Self-confidence and self-reliance
• Leadership skills and abilities
• Exciting opportunities
• Experience of teamwork and decision making
• Enjoyment

There are four sections to the Award. Participants should complete a minimum of 15 hours over 3 months on each of the skills, volunteering/service and physical recreation sections, with an additional 15 hours over 3 months to be spent on one of the sections. Students will be expected to make their own arrangements for these sections although this could involve participation in an existing club either at school or at elsewhere. In every case, an appropriate adult will be expected to act as a supervisor and complete a brief assessment of the participation in the activity.

The fourth section is the expedition. This is a two-day walking and camping journey, which is arranged by the School. Members of staff who have experience leading expeditions in the UK and who hold nationally recognised qualifications will give full training. This aspect of the award will be run through an approved outside organisation

Arts Award

Arts Award inspires young people to grow their arts and leadership talents: it’s creative, valuable and accessible.

Whatever art form you’re interested in, whatever your ability, Arts Award fits you.

You can do an Arts Award in any area of the arts from fashion to poetry, rapping to dancing, sculpture to film. You can be an artists or performer, or develop your skills in essential roles like marketing or stage management.

 

What do I do to get an Arts Award?

• take part in different arts activities
• be inspired by artists and arts organisations
• experience arts events
• share your arts skills with others
• put together a portfolio or arts log in your own choice of format

And for Silver and Gold you’ll also get to:

• set yourself arts challenges
• organise your own projects
• research arts careers and the arts sector
